Контроль численности клещей и индивидуальная защита населения являются эффективными способами снижения риска заражения клещевыми инфекциями. К традиционным методам неспецифической профилактики инфекций, возбудители которых передаются иксодовыми клещами, в России и во всём мире относятся использование защитной одежды, синтетических репеллентов и инсектоакарицидов для нанесения на одежду, обработки природных биотопов инсектоакарицидными средствами. Такие методы сохраняют высокую эффективность в течение многих десятилетий, однако имеют и существенные недостатки.
